Common questions, answered

A blowhole in the lava coast between the beaches of Hoya del Pozo and La Garita. The sea enters a cavity through an underwater opening, fills the basin and, in a swell, shoots out of a small hole like a geyser. You watch it from a viewpoint on the promenade.

Straight talk

What to know before you go.

  • Photos flatter it. Many pictures, ours included, are long exposures that turn the foam into silky veils. In person it is a churning basin and a sudden jet: loud, brief and never quite the same twice.
  • The rocks are the dangerous part. Every few months the local paper reports people climbing down to the edge, even with small children or on red-flag days, and there have been accidents. The waves here come in irregularly. Watch from the viewpoint.
  • Swim somewhere else. The beaches of Hoya del Pozo and La Garita are a few minutes' walk away and have lifeguards. The Bufadero has none.
  • A stop, not a day out. Few people stay longer than half an hour. It fits well with a walk along the Telde seafront or as a last stop before a flight.

Getting there

The Bufadero lies on the east coast of Telde, between the airport and Las Palmas, at the southern end of the La Garita seafront. The last stretch runs through a small housing estate by the sea.

By car

From Las Palmas
~20 min
From the airport
~15 min
From Maspalomas
~45 min
From Puerto de Mogán
~1 h
  1. 01Take the GC-1 and leave at the La Garita exit onto the GC-10.
  2. 02Follow the GC-10 (Avenida del Cabildo Insular) into La Garita and down to the coast.
  3. 03Turn south into the Hoya Pozuelo estate and drive along the Paseo Marítimo de Hoya Pozuelo to the car park at its end.
  4. 04Walk about 140 m along the paved path to the viewpoint.

Almost every street in the estate is one-way. If the small car park is full, go straight to the car parks at Hoya del Pozo beach or in La Garita instead of circling.

Route to the car park

Public transport

  • Line 75 from Las Palmas

Las Palmas – Vial Costero de Telde, hourly on weekdays from 05:45 to 21:45, every two hours on Saturdays and holidays. Get off at La Garita or Hoya del Pozo and walk about 700 m to the seafront.

  • Line 15

Las Palmas – Las Remudas also stops at La Garita (stop 3501), about 700 m from the Bufadero.

Check before you go

The Bufadero is at its most spectacular in exactly the conditions that make it dangerous. When there is a coastal warning, the Canary Islands government says not to take photos where waves break and to stay away from the sea, even if it seems to calm down for a moment. Look at the warnings and the sea forecast before you go.

On site

From the viewpoint you look down on a large basin in the black rock. With every big wave the water floods over its edge, and the air and sea pressed inside escape through a small hole with a jet and a hiss. Most people stay a few minutes; the promenade continues to the beaches of Hoya del Pozo and La Garita.

When is it worth it?

There are no opening hours. What you see depends on the sea; the time of day decides the light. Tap a time of day.

00–10Before 10:00★ Recommended

The sun comes up over the sea behind the Bufadero. Good light for photos, and the promenade is still quiet.

10–1910:00–19:00

Bright light from above, more people on the promenade. The show still depends only on the waves.

19–24Evening

The sun sets behind the island and the coast falls into shadow. The path at the Bufadero is not lit.

Our estimate. Tide and swell matter more than the clock.

Swell and rising tide

Waves pour over the rim into the basin in white cascades and the water spouts out of the small hole. This is what people come for.

Flat sea

The basin rises and sinks gently, without fountains. Worth a short look if you are passing, not a special trip.
