A stop on the GC-60, on the drive from Maspalomas into the interior. Below you lies the Barranco de Fataga, a 15 km ravine walled by cliffs. The Cabildo lists it as an astronomical viewpoint.

Straight talk

What to know before you go.

  • Stars need a car. The last 18 leaves Tejeda at 17:30, and in summer it isn't dark until about 22:30. For the night you need a car, or a taxi that waits.
  • Maspalomas is close. The spot is on the southern edge of the Starlight area, only 9 km from the hotels. To the south you see the coast's lights; the dark sky is over the ravine to the north.
  • A stop, not a day out. There is nothing beyond railings, panels and the view. Add Fataga and it becomes a trip.
  • Panels, not an observatory. Astronómico here means panels and a rotating star chart, as the Cabildo describes it. Bring your own binoculars.

Getting there

The viewpoint sits on the GC-60, the mountain road from Maspalomas through Fataga to San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It pairs well with Fataga village, 5 km further up.

Route to the car park

Public transport

  • Line 18 from Faro de Maspalomas

Global's line 18 runs via Campo Internacional and Avenida de Gran Canaria in Playa del Inglés up the GC-60. Uphill, the stop is called Mirador de las Yeguas and sits opposite the viewpoint, so you have to cross the road.

  • On into the mountains

The same line continues through Fataga to San Bartolomé, some trips on to Roque Nublo and Tejeda.

When is it worth it?

The viewpoint has no opening hours. Come by day for the ravine, by night for the sky. Tap a time of day.

00–11Morning

Not yet as hot. A good first stop on the way to Fataga and the mountains.

11–18Midday and afternoon

Hot; the south is the sunny side of the island. Bring water and a cap.

18–21Evening

The heat eases. In September the sun sets around 20:10 and it is properly dark from ~21:30.

21–24Night★ Recommended

This is why it is called astronómico: constellations, Sirius, Canopus, shooting stars. Bring a jacket, it gets draughty.

Sunset and darkness are our own calculation for mid-month. Sky figures from the Cabildo.

Dec

Dark from ~19:30, and the Cabildo puts average winter nights above 12 °C. The Geminids peak around 12–15 December.

Jun – Aug

Not dark until ~22:30. The Perseids peak around 10–13 August.

All year

According to the Cabildo the spot is sheltered from the trade winds, and the north's sea of clouds does not reach it.
