You meet at the visitor centre above Icod, not at the cave. A guide takes you by minibus and on foot to a locked entrance in the pine forest, then about 250 m into a tube that runs for 18.5 km. Tickets are sold online only and are often gone for days ahead.

Straight talk

What to know before you go.

  • It is almost always full. 96.5% of all places were sold in 2025. There are no tickets on site, so turning up without a booking does not work.
  • You don't drive to the cave. The entrance is about 1 km from the visitor centre in the forest, behind a locked gate. Only the tour gets you there.
  • Little cave, a lot of walking. You see about 200–250 m of the 18.5 km, and about one hour of the 2.5 hours is underground. The rest is the introduction, the minibus and the forest walk.
  • No bags. Backpacks, handbags and shoulder bags are not allowed. A bum bag, a camera round your neck and a small bottle in your hand are. Lockers are at the visitor centre.
  • Harder than it sounds. Gradients of up to 17%, very uneven ground and stairs. Closed shoes are required. The operator advises against the tour with claustrophobia.
  • Cold inside. 14 °C even in August. Wear long trousers and bring a jacket.

Getting there

The visitor centre is in the hamlet of Cueva del Viento, above the town of Icod de los Vinos on the north coast. The cave entrance itself is about 1 km away and can only be reached on the tour.

  1. 01Take the TF-5 west from Puerto de la Cruz to Icod de los Vinos. From the south you come over the hills via Santiago del Teide and El Tanque.
  2. 02In Icod follow the signs uphill to Cueva del Viento. Navigate to the visitor centre at Calle Los Piquetes 51, not to the cave entrance: that is in the forest behind a locked gate.
  3. 03Park next to the visitor centre and arrive 15–30 minutes before your slot. Leave bags in the lockers there.

The car park has about 20 spaces and OpenStreetMap shows no other car park within 800 m. Come early rather than circling.
