The tree stands inside the Parque del Drago, a 3-hectare garden with a ticket desk. The square next to San Marcos church looks straight at it and costs nothing. You only need a ticket to walk up to the trunk.

What to know before you go.

You don't need a ticket to see it. The square next to San Marcos church looks straight at the whole tree. The park gets you closer and to the foot of the trunk.
"Thousand years" is a name, not an age. The town estimates about 700 years, give or take 150. Other official pages say more than 800. No source backs 1,000.
The tree is propped up. Since the 1980s a metal support keeps it from tipping and a fan inside the hollow trunk fights fungus.
The butterfly house is separate. The Mariposario next to the park is a different attraction with its own ticket.

Getting there

Icod de los Vinos is on the north coast between Puerto de la Cruz and Garachico. The tree is in the old town, below San Marcos church.

By car

From Puerto de la Cruz

01From Puerto de la Cruz take the TF-5 west, which becomes the TF-42 towards Icod de los Vinos. From the south you come over the hills via Santiago del Teide and El Tanque.
02In Icod follow the signs for the Drago and the centre. Parking del Drago is an underground car park on Avenida de Canarias.
03Walk about 250 m to the tree. For the free view go to the square next to San Marcos church (Plaza de Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres).
04For the park itself, buy a ticket at the entrance or online (link in the facts below).

The old town streets are narrow and parking in the centre fills up. Drive straight to a car park instead of circling the square.

Other

From Puerto de la Cruz
Line 363 runs along the north coast about every 30–60 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends. Line 354 takes the slower route through the hills.
From the south
Line 460 from Costa Adeje crosses the hills via Santiago del Teide, about every two hours. The whole line takes 1 h 40 min.
From Santa Cruz
Line 108 runs via La Laguna and La Orotava along the TF-5.
From the bus station
About 400 m on foot to the tree. The Matadero stop is closer, about 200 m, but fewer lines stop there.
Taxi
Taxi ranks in the centre on Calle del Calvario and Avenida de Canarias.

OpenStreetMap shows several surface car parks 300–400 m away. Some are for customers only, so check the signs.

Blue zone in the centre

Paid

Parts of the centre are a paid, time-limited blue zone. Check the signs and the ticket machine.

On site

In the park you walk up to the foot of the dragon tree and on through native Canary Islands plants, past a replica Guanche cave, over bridges across a ravine and to viewpoints over the old town and the sea. From the square outside you see the whole tree without a ticket.

Wheelchair: The Tenerife tourism board lists the park as not wheelchair accessible. The square outside is the alternative.

When is it worth it?

The tree is visible from the square at any time. The park has opening hours. Tap a time of day.

00–09Before 9:00

The park is closed. You can still see the tree from the square next to San Marcos church.

09–18Day

The park is open every day of the year.

18–20Evening

Open until 20:00 from April to October. From November to March the park closes at 18:00.

20–24After 20:00

The park is closed. The square is public, so the free view is still there.

Adults €2, students and pensioners €1, children 6–11 €1. Under 6 free all year.

October and winter mornings

Some ticket sites give 10:00 as the opening time from October to March. The official sites say 9:00. After 10:00 you're safe either way.
